We all trust our employers to provide us with a safe working environment. We have confidence in them to make sure that they have taken the appropriate steps to reduce the dangers that we may encounter. Workers in some industries may experience more opportunities for injuries in workplace accidents, and it is important to understand exactly what sort of things are being done to eliminate these accidents.
This posting discusses a recent survey on workplace safety that was conducted by the National Safety Council (NSC.) The NSC asked workers in many different industries about their opinions on workplace safety, and this led to some surprising results.
Do employers appreciate the risks that they are subjecting employers to?
In the survey, over 60 percent of workers in industries such as agriculture and construction felt that their employers were only meeting the absolute minimum safety standards that are required of them under the law. This means that they feel that their employers understand where the line is, and what they must do just to ensure that they do not find themselves being fined or sanctioned by state or federal authorities.
Many of these employees will be placed into dangerous situations repeatedly during an average workday. If they cannot trust their employer to keep them safe, it could have a significant impact upon workplace morale.
Is safety the most important thing?
Another concern expressed workers is that employers focus more on production than they do safety. Workers feel under constant pressure to complete projects, which increases the potential risk of workplace accidents. The survey highlights the dangers of focusing on output rather than safety, and encourages CEOs and other members of management to promote a safe workplace culture.
What should you do if you are injured?
If you are injured in a workplace accident, you need to report your injuries to your supervisor as soon as possible in order to take advantage of the protections afforded to you under Louisiana workers’ compensation laws.
After disclosing your injury and seeking treatment, you should contact an experienced workers’ comp attorney to discuss your potential claim. Your attorney can make sure that your rights are protected, and that you receive the maximum amount of benefits that you are entitled to. This can be a very complicated process, and you should work with someone who can serve as your guide at each step.
